using a kick board...it gives the beginner something to hold onto and float their upper body while their legs and feet work to improve their kicking. you know they are improving when they are getting stronger because they move faster and easier.
i would suggest classes though because they will teach the different kicks that go with the different arm strokes. ex: the kick for the butterfly is not the same as the kick for the breast stroke

For a beginner,
just hold on to the side of the pool and let your body float...
then start kicking and continue till you get real tired....
youll learn the practiced kick in this way, within a week....
I can give you a guarantee....
This is the way to learn every kick....
The butterfly one is the most difficult and should b learnt last...
The freestyle kick is the easiest... start with that...
Best of Luck....

buy a floater and grab on to it and try not to panic. relax and do kicking while grabing on tightly to it and also slowly get use to be on the water floating then see how fast you progress. make sure you do not struggle and panic. step by step. do not swim to the middle of the pool. try swimming from the most shallow area of the pool from one shallow end to the other shallow end.
practice till you comfortable with it then try a little further. and do the same again. repeat it 3 or 4 more times
then u start from the most shallow area again and this time use the hands.

I'm not sure of you age but if you can still fit in the bathtub, that is a great place to practice. Just don't splash. Kicking should be little under the water anyway, so if you are doing it correctly, then you will not be splashing.

Definitely begin with holding onto the side of the pool, and just kick. Then move to a kickboard flotation device and practice different types of kicks (scissors, dolphin, etc.)

Remember to kick from the hip with a flexible foot and knee. Let your hips do the work and your feet will provide the paddle like movements.

Go in an 8 foot deep pool, tie a 50 pound cement block to both of your legs, have someone tie your hands behind your back, and drop the block in the pool,. Then try to get out before you drown to death.

hold the side of the pool and practice kicking. if not, try a floater while kicking, so you'll go somewhere

use a kick board, and focus on keeping your legs underwater and kicking fast. your legs will get stronger and become a lot more efficient. and that'll help a lot when you put your kick with your stroke.
