A start up disk is a floppy disk used to install or reinstall windows onto a computer. Startup disks are needed for when installing Windows 98, 95 and older. CD-Rom support was not available back than at the time. Now days you can just put the CD into the CD-Rom to install Windows XP. A startup disk can also be used to start the computer up when having difficulties or not able to log onto the computer.

It is basically a boot up disk. This lets you "start" your computer when it just won't boot up.

In the case of WIndows XP, your startup disk is both a startup disk and the Windows installer disk. It contains the "recovery console" which is basically a DOS prompt that lets you run DOS commands for maintainance purposes. You can also download extra information from the disk that Windows may have not installed by default.

It is possible for a startup disk to be a floppy disk. If it is, it normally DOES NOT contain the full operating system. Most OS's don't require floppy support anymore.

There are several others out there. A lot of these are based on Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, SuSe, Red Hat, etc..) Some "startup" disks can actually run your computer. These are called "live" CD's.

Hope that helps,
Jon

A startup disk is a bootable floppy disk that usually serves one of two purposes. It can be used eather to boot from directly or it can point the computer to boot something else.
The first option is used in repair disks, instalation for dos and other old OSs and even live operating systems that run from 1-n floppys.
The second option is used for OS instalation and repair disks but in a different way. For example if your pc cannot boot from a CD or DVD drive a startup disk can be used to point the computer in the right direction or say if you've installed a new on in a dual boot situation and cannot get to the old one (i.e. Windows over Linux).
Hope it helps
