Should concern for proper grammar and correct spelling be as important as it used to be?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Because the right-wing religious contingency in this country does not value education therefore faith will guide the idiots (flock) in the right direction ... and that will be the morally bankrupt religious zealots that have sold off our souls to be saved!!

Yee-haw, hillbillies!

The Americans are, as earlier stated on a downhill spiral. If the people do not use proper grammar on a regular basis, they will eventually slip when it is an expectation. Imagine being at a job interview and slipping out the word 'ain't'. First how would others in the room perceive you? Most would look upon you as a total hillbilly. This is the case for many other slang and shortcuts in the language people use today. As for myself I am regularly in a position of interviewing people for employment, and grammar is the first and major concern of mine. If you are not capable of using proper grammar, I would be afraid you would embarrass myself and my company to any potential customers.

R u 4 rel?

I'm joking. I actually fully agree with you, and I wish I knew an answer. It seems Americans, especially American kids, mostly want to get by the easiest way possible. This includes sliding through school and taking whatever shortcuts are possible.

Meanwhile, I've spent some time overseas, and seen a lot of kids who devote themselves to study, including developing a strong knowledge of English.

In the long run, Americans are only shorting themselves. By accepting a lowering of academic standards, we're going to have to accept the lowering of other standards, such as standard of living, that comes along with this.

I fully admit there are some kids that are exceptions. However, the race to the bottom -- where the ultimate winner becomes an illiterate celebrity for doing nothing -- appears to be the rule.

It should be, but society today does not seem to be putting any importance to it. Advertisers are a big culprit, using hip-hop slang in mainstearm ads, etc. Good examples are "2" instead of two or words that end in "z" instead of "s", as in "boyz".

I do medical transcription and I find myself actually proof reading even letters I get or anything that I read. It is just a habit to not care whether anything is spelled correctly and schools are not emphasizing this enough.

Because it has become so acceptable. Even headlines are misspelled these days (did I spell "misspelled" correctly?) and because our idiot President wants the rest of us to be as stupid as he is, which is why he put that "No Child Left Behind" sh*t into action. Our kids are growing up "stupider and stupider" every day, and we're letting it happen.

I ask myself that question everyday. I fear if I leave the internet for more than a year I will come back to a language I have never seen before.
