Just use a modern instant messenger which supports SMS. I would suggest MSN Messenger (now Windows Live Messenger) or Yahoo! Messenger. Both applications allow texting, however they will both need to be compatible and set up to receive IM SMSs.

Use yahoo messenger sent text message option.You can sent free sms throught that.
Your friend must have a mobile phone that is supported by yahoo for that.
