I have a couple of theories:
People who have eye problems may be more inclined to stay indoors than people who don't, because the glasses get in the way when they go outside. And reading is a common indoor activity.
-AND/OR-
Reading and computer use increases the frequency of eyestrain and other eye ailments.
It may also be genetic.

Because most people wear glasses for reading and most smart people read a lot.

I believe it is just a perception that someone is smarter because they were glasses. The glasses make you think they may be smarter than they really are.
