If so, what was the most interesting thing you learned about an opposing viewpoint?

Basically more than half of these questions have one side spouting off to the other and calling each other ignorant and then the best answer is most always given to the person who repeated and agreed with what the asker wrote.

It does not appear that most questions are asked or answered in this category in order to gain knowledge (not that there is anything wrong with that - just an observation - I myself am guilty of it from time to time).

I am just curious as to how many people have actually been interested in "the other side's" opinion and if so, have any made you think about your own position twice or even given you info that changed or modified your opionion on any topic, and if so what.

I am really asking for what opinions did you see that made you think or whatever.
While I gave the explanation as to why I am asking, I really AM asking - what opinion did you consider or change or whatever.

(and yes, de rak, I AM the grim rEaper - just took off the cloak and put my scythe away for the night)

(and IceCube - I did ask it in regard to this category (Politics and Government) for the reason you mention about the other categories).

SINCE NONE REALLY ANSWERED THE QUESTION I WAS ASKING, I'LL PUT IT TO ALL OF YOU TO DECIDE WHOSE WAS BEST.

When considering a viewpoint, I want to first know the other side and so I agree with you on that, what I think happens is that if your opinions are to one sided they may be a symptom of not fully understanding the sociological, cultural and political "peace"
that is not found in the extreme poles of the other, I think there is no safe zone or a perfect sense of things only a neutral zone whereby one understands the meaninglessness of controversy.

Simple psychology I think plays a big part in life it is profoundly ironic that few acquire this virtue of none being. This most simple of human trait is the reason ignorants persists in human nature.

That is true. I've noticed that as well or if you do say the truth about a situation they take it the wrong way when that's totally not the case. You tell the truth hoping to help that person. But rarely do I get an "I understand where you are coming from" : ) I guess not everyone is on here for the same purpose.. some to hear and some to be heard

I repeat and agree...haha It seems most questions about politics and religion are delivered so that they become a preaching platform for the "asker". I've tried to alsways research a person's answer after they've answered me with an opposing viewpoint, but I'm guilty as well of using Yahoo Answers as a soap-box. But I always go to the inks people provide. I think most people have it in their heads that they are smarter than the people who are arguing with them, just because their own intelligence has brought them to the conclusion they have reached. "You would have to be stupid to see otherwise." That's what's going through their (ahem..) OUR heads.

But, alas, your are guilty of the same thing through asking this question, aren't you?...haha =)

Seriously, I disagree. Obviously, there're stupid questions being asked, or in a lesser degree obvious questions. But, there're technical question in specific category like golf, mathematics, religions, riddles and many more questions are being asked honestly and answerers are putting their brain and research for it. I'm one among them. In so doing, I've learned also topics I've forgotten, things I've never asked, moods of the people and their interests. More than that, I felt being asked also questions about myself and what am I doing, which with some questions hit the points that I've never asked myself. It's a good time killers if you are in a bored office, or even at home on a rainy day. At least, I think it does for me.

I'm always interested in another point of view. It's just too bad some can't handle the question and resort to name calling(which adult's should have out grown). Also I would rather hear from someone who know's what they are saying and not just what they've heard.
