My husband has been collecting coins since he was a child and has some rare and valuable coins which are no longer minted. I collected coins from countries before they changed to the Euro thinking they may be worth something more in the future.

I'm not so sure people do as much as they used to but I keep different coins for my daughter likes to save Old US, and from other countries. Not a hobby though.

I collect some. Only the ones that are crushed though. Like the ones you put in like one penny and 50 cents and then you turn a handle bar and it crushes the penny and puts a logo on it. I have alot of them. So, I would say that yes some one is still going to be collecting them.
