The question is not what's the (medical) definition of hysteria, but how yould you define it in your own words.

It stems from the Latin, "hystericus", which means "affected in the womb". The word originally came about to describe a female state of confusion and sexual repression. "Hyster" is also noted in the word hysterectomy. If you are defined as being hysterical, you are behaving like a wild, sexually repressed woman whose emotions have run amok.

In modern times it has come to have a definition of a state of extreme emotion or laughing uncontrollably. It used to be a very sexist term. Try Googling the word.
