I was pulling grass from under steps and saw it move but was unable to kill it. It got away before I could get a shovel. Is there any way to keep them away?

Snakes are repelled by sulfer. Take a lawn fertilizer truck, like the SCOTTS 3000 and spread a heavy barrier of powedered sulfer around the perimeter of your house. You could also invest in some high decible aucustic pest control devices and place them around your house inside. These will not be heard by humans, but will be extremely irritating to animals. If you have a dog or a cat, this may not be the way to go though. But the Sulfer barier will work.

Not really, unless you tightly seal the bottom of your house. So that no snake can get through. Maybe call animal control to check for more snakes and nests?

Pigs eat snakes. Buy yourself a huge boar. The ones with tusk like in the film hannibal are ideal.
