You can trust him to continue falling off the deep end. Of course not, some scientists invented a military computer communications system, and when the Senator Gore was on a cmte he voted in favor of allowing some of that technology into the public eye. He wasn't even an important senator on that committee

No and hell no.
lamoviemaven - I guess if we follow your "logic" Harry Truman invented the A-Bomb and the guy who discovered the wheel is responsible for the car, super highways, trains, baby strollers and pretty much anything else that has a wheel.
Yeah, the jerk signed some legislation authorizing expenditures to NSFNET, a system the military had used for 20 years and the public school system and colleges had already been using as well. In 1991 Gore proposed widening the scope of NSFNET to include MORE K-12 schools, community colleges, and 2-year colleges.
Congratulations, he knows how to use a pen so let's credit him with the internet. HAHAHAHA

I read all or most of the replies to this question, and I never read the term "information superhighway." Since this was Gore's phrase used extremely often when he referred to the internet, I am thinking that most of the people responding to this question have no idea what they are talking about.
At the time Gore was running for president, I was extremely pleased with the Clinton/Gore administration, but I could not bring myself to vote for Gore for our president. However, he was a strong voice for broadening the scope of the thing that has become (what we call) the Internet. (which is technically not the World Wide Wed which is what most people call the Internet....two different things.)
Just for the record, J.C.R. Licklider is credited with beginning the Internet. He is a remarkable man, and if you have any interest in science, you should definitely read about him.

Yes, and yes.
First off, Al Gore never said "I invented the internet". The GOP loves to lie and pretend that is a direct quote. What he did say was thay during his years in Congress, he "initiated the creation of the internet", and it's true. While serving as chairman on a key science subcommittee, he shepparded through legislation that authorized the creation of five supercomputer centers. Those five centers became the backbone of the internet.
Gosh, given the actual facts (man, the right wing sure hates when you use actual facts in lieu of lies and character assassination), his assertion seems downright accurate, wouldn't you say?

Even for a politician Gore is the slimest of the slimey. Lets look at Gore's career.
He had nothing to do with the Internet. In fact he knew very little about it when he was vice president. He did though try to kill it on many occasions. One of many occasions Gore has tried rather comically to steal fame from others.
Gore's most famous achievement has been his wife's heading of the PRMC. This was a group that got many books, some of them considered classic works of fiction pulled from library shelves. For fun they held book and record burnings. I mean they literally gathered together and threw books and records into big fires.
The sum of the PRMC's efforts was to get a Congressional hearing which was to debate the PRMC's attempt to ban the entire music forms of Rap and Heavy Metal. The end result was the warning labels you see on CDs with expliciet lyrics today.
Gore while in office voted frequently for pro-gun and pro-tobbacco issues. Then as a Vice president wanted to ban both. So he is a major hyprocrite.
Gore might as well tattoo a for sale sign on his forhead. He was knee deep in the Chinese purchaces of the Clinton administration. His frequent fund raising scandals were the last straw for many and Gore was the inspiration for fund raising reforms.
Gore was knee deep in the Foster cover up. Whether Foster was murdered is still most likely yes but very hard to prove. The Clintons and Gore however broke dozens of major laws protecting themselves and tampering with evidence when it happened. Quite clearly they had things to hide and also very likely they made it impossible to find Foster's killer if they themselves have nothing to do with it.
The CDA was probably Gore's and the American people's most sinister moment. This was a law with the typical PRMC attitude. It would have made cussing even in a private email a felony punishable up to five years in prison. Can you imagine being sent to prison for cussing in an email or a private forum? Even in a public forum. That wasn't the worst of it. The law went on to make it an imprisonable offense to even describe bodily functions. This would have made many proffesions including Doctors almost impossible to use the internet. Most health sites would have been banned in the US as it's very hard to do much to help people out with many conditions without describing "vulgar" bodily functions. Not even McCarthy would have dared to trample free speech in the grandoise way Gore did. The CDA was Gore's baby and he was it's champion. The Clinton adminsitration not only sheparded this bill through but apealed when the courts struck it down. Then they attempted several times to write milder versions and get them passed.
In short Gore is the biggest enemy of free speach the US has ever had.
Gore as a person, and I use that term loosely as I've seen more personality out of carved figures is about as repulsive as a human can possibly get. Entirely devoid of morals, sense of humor, values, loyalty or free thought. His sole emotion seemed to be a hunger for power.
I am completely confused how anybody could have supported this monster in any endeavor. I dislike most politicians. I've not thought well of one that held office in my lifetime. Reagan and JFK were the closest to being decent people since Teddy Rooseveldt. Even Nixon who I detest seemed like a good guy next to Gore.
