Robert E Lee graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in 1829. He was second in his class of 46. Even more impressive, he graduated with NO demerits (a true rarity).

Incidentally, the US Naval Academy (at Annapolis MD, hence often just called "Annapolis") was not founded till 1845.

Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, Philip Sheridan and Sidney Albert Johnson were in his class.
