I'm referring to Yahoo's promotional offer for domain name registration.

Unfortunately, you don't provide enough information to answer this question, like which service you got the quote from.
Generally, if you get only registration, you earn the right to your domain. And you can create as many subdomains under it, as you please.
However, you need webspace to host your domain and you also need a nameserver, where you can enter the subdomains.
For beginners, it's easier to get all of that in a nice package. At dreamhost you get unlimited subdomains for 7.99$ a month.
