If I remember correctly, it was Garth Brooks when he was going as his alter-ego, Chris Gaines. Just search for Chris Gaines and you'll see.

I do know that Garth Brooks died his hair black for a movie about a rock and roll singer. Some of the music that was done for that movie, by Garth Brooks, was released on the radio. After the movie was finished, he went back to doing country music

Could it be you are thinking of Garth Brooks? He put on a black wig and pretended to be some other singer, it failed horribly! He went back to country.
