Do you think I should wait and let her decide on her own when she gets older or go ahead and get them pierced? Is it ok at this age? I was thinking that she will just scratch them and they will get infected.

I belong to a hispanic family and all the girls in the family had their ears pierced at 14 months or younger. It's very rare that a girl in her teens WON'T want her ears pierced, so I say go ahead. None of the girls in our family got any kind of infection or scratched at them.

It's just important to remember to wipe them with alcohol every few hours to prevent infection.

I like this question. Here is my take on it.....

My sisters ears were pierced when she was a baby @ 11 months.
My ears were pierced at 8 yrs old. Which do I think is better? Well just let me say that my sister does not remember her piercing, but I remember running, screaming, crying and hurting.

As for her scratching them, babies dont even know they are there.

Also....... as for the comment about it not being normal to pierce a babies ears... It is VERY NORMAL in some cultures.

Do it while she is young. It is less traumatic for her.

I would wait until she's old enough to decide for herself. 7 is considered the "age of reason". Besides, she's only 14 months...she probably doesn't give a flip if her ears are pierced right now...it would be painful for her, and could very well get infected and cause more problems than it's worth. If you do get them pierced, you're doing it for yourself, not her.

I think you should let her decide when she's older. If she really wants them, she won't worry about the pain. My mother pierced my ears when I was 5... kicking and screaming... but when I got older, I decided I wanted a second hole (and since she forbid that, go figure)... I took a safety pin and did it myself.

Anyway, why worry about getting the earring caught on something at this young age. She has plenty of time before earrings play a role for her. This is a "mom-making-her-daughter-look-cute" phase.

I would wait. At fourteen months, kids get into all kinds of germs, she is likely to have dirty hands and then touch her ears, causing infections. It's not worth having her go through the pain of infected ears (which could actually cause SERIOUS complications if not treated) just for fashion. Hold off. Wait until she is older and can decide for herself AND when her risk of infection is lower.

Let her decide on her own. I don't agree with the vanity that goes along with aomeone piercing their daughter's ears at such a young age. An aquaintance of mine had her daughter's ears pierced when she was a baby and by the time she was three years old, she was wearing her mother's diamond earrings because they were the only ones thry had with a screw on backing. She kept losing other earrings.

My mom had my ears pierced when I was 2 and my friend Tara was an infant. The doctor did it for us. There is nothing wrong with piercing her ears and if she decides she doesn't like them she'll let you know by taking them out. I rarely wear earrings but my holes are still open and sometimes I do like having the option that I can wear earrings. I like looking back in pictures and seeing cute little candy cane earrings in christmas pictures and funky halloween ones.

Chances are she is going to mess with them but even as an adult we are tempted to fiddle with piercings. she'll get used to it.

I got my daughter's ears peirced when she was 6 months old. They wont get infected as long as you keep the stuff they give you to put on them untill they heal. Or at least apply peroxide every day. If she doesn't like it she can always let the holes grow out if she wants to later.

While your at it, why don't you tattoo on some eye liner, get her a tummy tuck and some botox.

She's 14 months and you're starting with this stuff? Let her get her ears pierced for herself not for you.

Man you people are all sick. Now I know why anorexia is such a problem in preteen and young teens. She's a baby for God's sakes.

She is still growing and learning to fight off infections. It is not normal to put earrings on a child of that age. If and when she asks about ear rings then you and her can discuss it. By then you will see how she takes care of her self and how clean she keeps her face and hands.
