It's an easy thing to do with a free Microsoft program called "TweakUI". That program includes a lot of little "tweaks" that you can use with Windows XP, including getting rid of those curved arrows on your desktop icons.

You might be be able to find similar, if not exact, icons in other icon files. Right click on the icon and click Properties, Change Icon, and Browse.

That arrow indicates that there are more programs under that topic. You would have to remove the other programs under that topic. If you hover over the black arrow you will see more programs listed.

you would have to make your own icons...all icons with this little black arrow indicate that it is indeed a shortcut.....
