I've tried cleaning the disc. It will say on the browser "Playstation Game". I click it and it just stays black forever. Never loads it. Sometimes it will say "Please enter a Playstation 2 or Playstation format disk."

You don't need to clean the disc, you need to clean the lens. You have to be careful, but open up your ps2, take a q-tip and just brush off dust....if that doesn't work then try dipping the q-tip in some rubbing alcohol (don't drench it, just damp!), and then wipe the lens. Worked for me.

You sure it's the "real" Final Fantasy 8 game and not just some burned copy? It should play it as long as you haven't opened up you PS2 and modded it or something else. Try to play other PS1 games and see if they work. Also try and borrow a friend's copy of FF8 and see if it works. Good luck.

i had this same problem with a ps1 game when i first got my ps2, it turned out that the game disc was indeed damaged so it may not be your ps2 at all. if you have access to a friends ps2 then try it on theirs, then you should know whether or not it's the game or your system, but it sounds to me like it's your game. my version of 8 works fine. good luck fixing the problem.

its really dangerous to take anything around the house and just take it to your PS2. if you want to clean the lens, i say be safe and go out and buy a lens cleaning CD. Wal-Mart should have them. Sometimes the fan in the back will get covered in Dust. Just take like a feather duster and dust it out. Its very unwise to crack open a PS2 without a professional present.

Your ps2 reading lens is malfunctioning you either have to clean the lense or take it to a repair shop.
