I'm not even sure how USA has a FIFA world ranking of #5 in the whole world, something wrong with that ranking system, it's nowhere near accurate. Czech's #2 ranking is definitely deserved because they cleaned the US's clock during their game today. The US's performance was clumsy, lackluster and pretty much shows why another team should have taken their place at the worldcup, they had easy teams during their qualifiers which pretty much guaranteed their admittance to this tournament.
To answer your question, the 2 teams have already played a match earlier in 2006/05 and England won the match easily.
The US only does well when it invades a country. When it's invited, it kind of gets confused and doesn't know how to handle the situation. Maybe they can mobilize their Iraqi & Afghanistan military forces and then maybe they might have a chance of getting into the round of 16.
Hopefully they do better against Italy & Ghana, it would be nice if they could at least score one goal during this tournament. Sorry to be so blunt, I've watched US soccer and really don't have any respect for the way they play, no class & no skills equals no wins for team USA.

England all the way because the United States just aren't into soccer. The Americans didn't even qualify to the Round of 16. At least England is going on to the Quarter-Finals.
Yes, I agree with you, most people will, in their hearts, shout, "England!" if they know some things about the national teams.

England could be the most watched country in the world. And you can blame this on the soccer atmosphere in Europe but America is still up and comeing. Right now England has the edge as their soccer legacy proves to be overwhelmingly stronger then the US'. However, Given the rate of growth with soccer among the youth in the States i will say that in 30 years the US will win a World Cup and will become a formatable foe for anyone they face in the future! This world cup showing for the US was shamed by the Coach who failed to show anytype of understanding of the game.

I'm American, but I have to say England's team is definitely better. They beat the USA last year, and did you see the World Cup game today? They lost to the Czech Republic, 3-0. It was pretty bad. Go England!!
