Standard ATA drives can be set to either Master or Slave position. This was back when you had to set the correct one where you connected the cable. These days, the device is smart enough to recognize where it is connected on the cable... that's what cable-select jumper allows

An IDE cable (what you plug your hard drive into the motherboard with) has three plugs on it. One is separated from the other two and goes into your motherboard. The other two are closer together. Of these two, the one in the middle is called the "Slave" and the one at the end is called the "Master". In layman's terms, the Master is the hard drive that the computer will boot from whereas the Slave is a hard drive that will be used as a secondary hard drive.
When you set your drive to "Cable Select" it will automatically set the drive to either Master or Slave depending on where you plug it into on the IDE cable.

Cable Select is used in place of the traditional Primary/Secondary settings. Set both drives on Cable Select and the primary drive is the one on the end of the cable.

Most new computers use the cable select feature of the drive. The first drive in the chain will be Primary and the 2nd is secondary. Better known as C and D.
