You should read "The Mystery of Atlantis" by Charles Berlitz, it uses real evidence to discuss whether or not Atlantis existed and if so where was it and who were its people? It places the position of Atlantis similar to your line of thinking using maps and recounts of ancient greeks and mayans who recorded trade with people who were in all liklihood from Atlantis.

I am currently reading this book "Forbidden History" (definitely read it!!) and it discusses many things of that nature. Scientists have actually ruled out that it was not directly in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In Ch. 6 Case for the Flood, it states the discovery of ruins of a submerged city off Yonaguni Island in Japan, the remains of a huge underwater city lying off the western tip of Cuba just east of the Yucatan, and another sunken city in India's Bay of Cambay.
I agree with the scientific face of cataclysm, but the true underlying question is: What created this flood?
The theory of an "Ice Age" is just a theory. A theory that the public absorbed like a sponge. It was a Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz that claims to be the inventor of the Ice Age. Which he did to "explain" the world wide flood idea. Therefore engulfing cities worldwide.
The evidence highly disproves the Ice Age theory. So what did create this flood?
I highly recommend reading this book. I am still thumbing through it and attempting to figure out what the text books and teachers are not telling us.

What is the question?!
I think the theory that the same race seeded both the Mayan and the Egyptians (as well as other races on earth) makes more sense than to say they are one place that split in half.
In fact many say that Mexico or North or South America was actually Atlantis. I like that idea too.

Pyramids were built all over the world, but for different purposes and in very different ways. I think Atlantis was merely a place further west than Europe that... well, sank. People would've travelled there as they did all the other places from the birth of civilization.

Some people say that ancient astronauts (aliens) came to earth thousands of years ago and gave civilization and religion to man, (and some say even created him).
They say that the aliens came to earth to mine for gold to repair the damaged atmosphere on their planet. There is evidence on ancient mining that is over 100,000 years old in Africa and South America along with other evidences used to support this theory and that they were the ancient gods and that it was they that built the pyramids.
If this is true it would explain different nations having similar cultures, including why pyramids have been found all over the planet by many different cultures.

Hmm... I dunno. The other theory is that it just kinda sank under the ocean due to a big wave, like a tsunami or hurricane. It could also have just floated away and people just couldn't live there anymore.
Heck, I always thought it was Antarctica, or something; I mean...stuff DID live there at one point, right? Where'd it go?
