My box turtle just threw up and its very unusual for her. I haven't changed her food or anything else as far as that goes. This is my first turtle and I don't know if they just do that from time to time or if I should be concerned and take her to a turtle doctor.

What did you feed her? This is usually the cause. If the food piece was too big, they will choke on it or throw it up, which is a good sign.

Is it showing any other characteristics? Lethargic? Runny nose? Lack of regular appetite?

I would not be too worried yet if it only threw up once. Keep a close eye on her and keep the temps up at least 75F in the cool side and 90F in the hot side of the tank. The higher temps will help its immune system. Do this until you feel she is well again.

If you need more answers, feel free to email.

Turtles rarely throw up. Did she spit up partially digested food, or just food that she was chewing? What kind of food was it?

I am concerned that this might be a blockage- but if she is eating OK since then, I would follow the 'pay attention but wait for more symptoms' rule before calling the vet.

The only answer I can logically give is: blockage as stated or parasites. Either way, if the turtle does not eat or drink, get it to the vet.
