I had LOTS of stitches. It's uncomfortable rather than painful. Drink lots water, eat lots of fibre, to keep everything moving. Last thing you want is to be constipated, because that's when the stitches will hurt!

Your body is designed to do the stretch and just recover all happy and well, no epesiotomy (freezing then small cut to open the path) is really necessary unless the baby is just huge, to prevent many little tears instead of just the cut, but you will guarantee stitches if you have that done. I opted out.
If you should receive stitches then yes, the salt in your urine would burn a bit, so the hospital would provide you with a "sitz" bath, a little cover that fits over the toilet that you fill with lukewarm water. You can even pee in it while you are submerged, if you are afraid to put any water pressure at all on the area with the squeeze bottle, to dilute your urine. It is meant for sitting in to relax you :) The nurses will give you a stool softening pill to make sure that part of it is a breeze. No worries :) The little baby near you will make all of it seem like heaven and so worth it!

Peeing is not that bad unless you have to be cathetorized for any reason, then it is only slightly irritated the first time you go after they remove the cathetor. Not pain, just hard to go.
Passing stool can be extremely painful if you have to be cut. Some Drs are able to deliver without cutting . (Talk to you Dr. about that before labor) I suggest asking for a stool softener immediately following the birth so that when you finally are able to go it may not hurt as bad. Generally it is only the first couple stools that will be painful because of the stress of labor.
Also, make sure you get a Sitz bath.most hospitals will give you one but if they don't you get one at most drug stores. That will help with the stitches.
There is also a first aid spray that you can spray on yourself that will numb the area slightly. The hospital gave it to me with 2 of my kids. I can't recall the name though.. You can probably ask about it.. someone may know what it is. I think it started with a D. It is at all drug stores in the first aid section.
Good Luck!

You can take a stool softener for the passing of stools. I had a fourth degree laceration and i was afraid to go poo but it's okay it hurts worse to hold it. You gotta do it sometime. Use tucks pads to clean the stitches and to sooth. I think if you have an episiotome that you will heal faster than if the doc lets you tear naturally. Read up on episiotomies and make the best decision for you. I had a really big baby that's why i tore so bad.
I also recommend sitting on your bobby pillow it works great.
Colace is a mild stool softener usually recommended by the doc.

Sometimes if you have a catheter put in. its really hard to pee after they take it out and it can be painful if the urine backs up in there, but you will goo again. Although with a vaginal deliever you wont have a catheter, you would with a c-section. having a bowel movement is a bit rough either way but IF you require stitches because you have to have a Episiotomy ( where the dr makes a small cut to make more space for the baby to pass through so that you dont rip open) then having a bowel movement kinda hurts but it passes I promise. Ask for the cream or spray to help numb yourself a bit and also a siz bath. Enjoy your new baby

It won't be difficult to pee, but it might burn a little if you've had an episiotomy or you tore. Your doctor will give you some things to help with that before you leave the hospital. A squirt bottle that you'll fill with lukewarm water and rinse yourself with after using the toilet (that warm water feels SO good!) and some Tucks pads (used for hemmorhoids, but they work for tears, too) that also are very soothing. As for having a BM, it might hurt if you have to strain. If you feel you have to go to the bathroom, don't strain...just let it come out by itself. Your doctor will probably also give you a stool softener (mine gave me Senokot) to help with things.
That's with a vaginal delivery. I had a c-section with my second baby, and no, it didn't hurt to pee. The first time I had a BM, I cried. I was worried I'd rip out my staples. Nothing bad happened though....just don't strain, and take a stool softener if your dr. gives you one.

It can. But you will pee, and the constipation will clear up (as will the hemmoroids!). Stitches do hurt a little but a nice cool cloth and some tylenol or advil helps. The stitches heal fairly quickly.

i had many stitches. I think it scared me more than hurt. like i thought it was going to hurt so i got more nervous than scared. take stool softeners everyday. that helps a lot. the hospital where i went gave this spray stuff to help too. it wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be, the thought of it is worse than the actual pain.
