The Dells is tacky to the nth degree, but it is great for kids.
Storybook Village, Water slides and water parks, Ducks boat tours, the all-you-can eat places.
You have to go to the all-you-can-eat pancake place. It's great.

Wisconsin Dells is a good family oriented vacation spot located near Baraboo and not real far from Madison, the state capital.

How about the Minocqua area...It is tourist enough to have activities for kids - swimming, horseback riding, mini golf, hiking. There is a great place called Jim Peck's Wildlife Preserve that has a petting zoo with bears you can bottle feed, deer roaming free, baby animals of all types that kids can hold and pet, and is in a peaceful setting where you can just roam around.

Yeah, the Dells is nice as long as you understand that it is, in fact, a huge, tacky tourist trap. My recommendation is to go north to the Minoqua/Woodruff/Rheinlander area and rent yourself a cabin on a lake (I personally like Lake St. Germain). Teach your 7 and 9 year old how to bobber fish off the docks (-there's some great perch and bluegill up there-) while the little one plays on the beach.
It's a nice getaway.
(I assume you wanted to get away from Milwaukee. If you're open to Milwaukee, let me know, and I'll change my story!)
