Selector fork inside the transmission has been bent or broken.

Try disconnecting linkage at the transmission to check if the trans is capable of shifting into 1st and reverse, that way you'll know if you have a trans problems or not.

Will shift into first and reverse when the engine is not running? If it will, you have a clutch problem. These are not syncronized gears and will grind if the clutch does not fully release.
