One, because people love to play the victim.
Two, the people who claim to hate attention are often the ones who act out or act "different" or "unique" in ways that grab people's attention.
Chances are the people who say that really aren't that deep to begin with. People usually aren't that hard to understand.
You're right about being true to yourself, if there is a genuine "yourself" and not a depressed/complicated representation of yourself.
