Your question is so profound that it may be difficult to answer, yet its simplistic nature is beautiful...
Pesimists and defeatists would like to tell you that it is impossible because of human nature, but that is half the problem.
The first step we can make is to understand that "we" are the problem, lets stop making excuses for ourselves and work towards creating that peace.
I feel that in order to answer your question we must first understand that war is an effect, the last stop on a seemingly endless cycle of human tradgedy.
What is the cause of war?
Once we understand the causes we can work towards preventing these tradgedies.
The task is daunting and the road that lies ahead is fraught with
turmoil, but it doesnt have to be violent(or does it?)
There are two driving forces that I can think of and probably more that i cant but on the greater scale there is one and then there is its counterpart; cause-effect, day-night, peace-war...life and death how do you stop the forces of nature?
But there is hope, because some day humanity WILL find a cure for its ailments and all in part because people like you ask
GREAT questions like this one...simplicity IS genious!
I thank you for taking part in the greatest revolution mankind has ever undertaken, and i apologize if i didnt answer your question well enough, but when i read it i was truly moved and felt obligated to express these thoughts
Thank you again and peace to all......now more than ever...

well to other ppl there is always a reason to kill (osama other creppy guys in iraq..) but u could protest against it or run for president and change it because he/she has alot of power and can end a war as easily as he/she could start and u could make a website against war everyone goes on the internet but these are just ideas and also i think if the us wasnt dominant above pretty much every other country then we mite get somewhere

maybe buy STOP HONORING veterans w/ monuments and parades.. i'm was a volenteer in viet nam and verteran of war as my father and both grandfathers before me...... i'm sure all war veterans would agree you can honor us all by makeing "our"war the last war... and not making war a family tradition.... cheney/ bush are nothing less than evil criminals..'thought they could just "pop"over in some 3rd world country under all sorts of false pretexes and have their way.... well karma dont work like that!. and GOD will exact justice on them and their followers....
ok , this may be a more reasonable answer; when we feel we have to intervien in another countries affairs ... and sometimes we must[ because we are the big boys on the block and we can act as big brothers] for exaple where slavery, famine, genocide is going on .we SHOULD act . and ACT FAST[ and maybe unilateraly] but, BUT.. we should do it MAGNANIMOUSLY, with out self intrest, without saying , "whats in it for us , what are we going to get out of it?" at present and in the past EVERY time we go to HELP another country its done with deals... how many bases can we put in your country ? how can we do buisness with your country[ often exploit]. how can we get our hooks into your oil fields??? if we acted and then left without as much as expecting a thank you... things would work out for everyone... thats the way karma works. and for those who WILL say," well we need their oil".. i say , "just how many people are YOU personaly willing to kill at the gas station every time you fill up!!![ kill this baby, i'll give you 1/2 tank of gas]???? and if we are to go to war .. an all out DRAFT is a MUST.... polotitians kids, athletes.. everybody with a pulse gets a job! no free rides that will slow down the agression for sure.

Pursuade all stakeholders that they shouldnt bite more than they can chew. And be content with their fair share.
Yes, being second sucks too; I know.
Purposful power is great; I'd submit to any group that has purposful power. But absolutely not to greed (is the spelling right?)
