r mean you can record on to the cd/dvd. rw mean after you record you can also re write over what you put on there if you wanted to

If it's just data, it just means the amount of storage, although a CD drive won't be able to read the DVD disk, but a DVD drive can read a CD disk. R means it will burn onto the disk. R/W means it will burn on a chemical on the disk. This chemical will wear out over time and of course will shift when touched, washed ect. The reason for R/W disks is for people that like to make a lot of changes without going through disks, especially pre MP3 player.

rw's are rewritable and r's are not. so u can use rw's over and over again if u want to copy over the stuff thats already on there. but depending what your using them for some rw's dont play on car cd players or other cd players, the r's almost never have that problem

"R" stands for readable. Once the information's on the CD, it's there and can't be added to or deleted.
"RW" stands for readable/writable. You can add and delete information from the CD repeatedly.
