He makes between 75 to 100 grand a year. He works in the trades. He has a kid and a wife who stays home. Some months he will make about 8 grand and others 3 grand. However there are periods when he is flat broke due to no work being around.
What can he do, he is also a compulsive shopping addict.
But he has toned it down.
His wife tells him to pay all the bills and he says dont worry about it (because he gets a check the next week) so he goes and spends it on whatever.
He doesnt listen to her or me.

Sounds like this guy needs to be on a weekly (or daily) allowance. To do that, all the assets in the marriage would have to be jointly owned, so he couldn't sell anything or borrow against anything. And the household bank accounts and such would have to set up so that money could be drawn only if BOTH he and his wife agreed to it. And if he had a credit card, it would have to have a VERY low credit limit, like for a kid. And someone would have to be there when he got paid to make sure the check went straight to the bank with no cash recieved. Don't know how you are going to convince HIM of this.

Sometimes it helps to have a professional financial counselor come in. A man might not listen to his wife or his family when they tell him he can't afford to buy a boat or belong to the Country Club, but will listen to an outside professional. Good luck.

If brother has pooled aside some "rainy day" money for those 'flat broke' months, and still cover the bills--then he's free to spend his money as he feels fit.

Yes: shopping addicts DO have a treatable condition, but that's his call to make if he should admit he needs help; no one else can make him step up to that plate.

He has a wife who should be addressing this matter--not you. And that gives me the impression maybe YOU are a bit jealous of his financial successes that you don't have.

How can he be MORE BETTER? Sounds like stupidity runs in the family. There's no hope for any of you stupid people, it's a wonder you all don't die because you weren't taught to breath!
