Because the US is probably the most jingoistic nation in the world. If the US isn't the best, the sport doesn't exist. Examples:

It certainly explains why Americans were so upset about the 2003 basketball world championships and why the US *STILL* can't get over losing in the 1972 olympics.

When an American holds the 100 metre world record, he's "world's fastest man". When a non-American holds the 100 metre record, the 200 metre world record holder is "world's fastest man"...unless, of course, *he* is also not an American.

F1 was off the radar in the US for a decade until now, but only because an American driver is in the series.

In sports where the US is a lesser competitor (soccer, rugby, F1, MotoGP), it's athletes show the best manners and the most sportsmanship. When they're at the top, most US athletes act like egotistical pricks.

1 We are not at the top of the food chain in terms of international tournaments, so there is really no sense of national vanity there.
2 Soccer games are not as fast paced as football, baseball, or basketball. You don't really get a lot of goals in one game, Americans are so used to double and triple digit games, when was the last time a soccer game has more than 10 goals?
3 Again, because US team wasn't doing so hot in the past world cups(not too hot either this year).

Nope, English didn't INVENT soccer or football if you will, if you goggle the subject, you will find that lots of ancient cultural had sports similar to soccer. The Europeans simply popularized it.
