My mother was diagnosed with early an stage of breast cancer about 5 years ago and pretty much had to have the breast removed. She's completely ok now but I'm starting to worry about the same thing happening to me.I'm turning 19 later this year and have hear a number of theories on how genetics will affect my chances.A friend of my mother's claims that every disease is caused by what's going on with people on the inside/emotionally which scares the hell out of me because I'm like my mother in a lot of way in the way I react to things. Are there any proven factors than reduce my chances? My mother is the only one is the family to ever have had cancer.

My mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was around 30...she had chemo and then the cancer went into remission. It came back when she was about 35 she had one masectomy, but Unfortunately it came back when she was about 38 in the same area where she had the masectomy and had pretty much spread throughout her entire upper cavity. I am not aware what the chances are of you getting cancer but after speaking to an oncologist i do know that you should have a mammogram when you are at least 5 years younger than when your mom was diagnosed (ie if she was 30 you should have your mamo at 25). you will need a prescription for one though b/c they don't give mammograms to women younger then 35. also i was advised to not use birth control. Some GYNs may say that there is no concrete evidence that there is a connection, but i rather not take the chance. the levels of estrogen and hormones can increase the risk. So i prefer to listen to an oncologist as opposed to a GYN. Also you should definitely start your self test I have been doing those since i was around 15 when my mom was first diagnosed. At that age I thought i felt something but it was just a lymph node but at least i was aware of something that didn't feel normal. i hope that i could be of assistance. i do know that there are some knew genetic test that try to tell you the chance of you getting any inherited diseases but i haven't researched those to much. also like anything eat lots of veggies (especially green vegetables) and try to watch your diet

Very little chance. Less than 1: 1000 say. But as a precaution every woman should learn properly to check her breast once a month in the bath room in front of a mirror. and don't worry too much. No harm can come to you unless it is Allah's will. However you should be smart and take all precautions but do not worry. If you do palpapte your breast properly every month and suppose even if you notice a small lump, then prompt treatrment will save you from misery and death. So relax, do things properly. Fine Needle Aspistion Cytology which uses the same injection syringe and needle can find out the answer so easily without cutting etc whetehr a lump is a cancer or not. But your chance is really less tnan 1: 1000 .

Believe it or not, the National Cancer Institute approves the following health claim for cultured/fermented soy products like miso: "a cup of miso soup a day can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 50%."

There are lots of ways to transcend the fatalistic paradigm of genetics. First, accept that fast food consumption may be as "genetic" as the DNA in the nuclei of your cells. It all comes down to controlling what you put into your body, and food is the most powerful way to do that. So many phytonutrients protect us from disease....eating organic and fresh fruits and vegetables can be the best thing you can do for your health.
