The Vietnam War was a civil war between north and south Vietnam. Other countries got involved to help one side or the other, mostly those with business interests in the small country. When the USA came into the war, France left after fighting 20 years. The US government says we were there to fight Communism but others belileve the US government was there for other reasons.

well, it wasn't because of the threat of communism in Asia, that's for sure. This was just used an excuse to get our troops over there and start dropping bombs. The fact of the matter is, that a lot of different countries have wanted to get there hands on Vietnam, for many reasons. China, France, Japan, etc. The biggest reason is it's location. Vietnam geographicaly is a central hub in South East Asia. He who controls Vietnam, controls trade to Japan, Austrailia, China, South Pacific, Malaysia, SIngapore, and even the United states. The location of Vietnam makes it accessable to the entire world. Which is ideal for trade. earlier in history, the Chinese had been battling with the Vietnamese for over three hundred years. Then came the French period of imperialism, then came the U.S bombings. All of them out witted by Vietnamese soldiers. Everybody wonders how they did it. Well, If you had been in constant combat for as many years as vietnam, then you would probably know a thing or two about shooting a gun as well.

One of the reasons the US entered the Vietnam War was to stop the wave of communism that was engaging Asia, particularly South East Asia. Communism was spreading rapidly through the area. In 1961, way before we were born, there was a former Soviet Leader. . .Nikita Kruschev who was determined to have this campaign of liberation from capitalism. President JFK sends ARMY troops to train South Vietnamese army members. Basically, the fight was:
Allied North Vietnamese troops:
China
Soviet Union
The People of North Vietnam

Allied South Vietnamese Troops:
US
South Korea
South Vietnamese Army

To keep our war machine factories busy busy busy.... war is good for the economy, plus some guys think its fun. We wanted to help out our buddies the French too, international prestige and such. The French were only too happy to turn the war over to us.

The gulf of tonkin incident was likely staged by the CIA to galvanize American support for the war.... as in "Who do those slant-eyed slopes think they're shootin' at, let's get 'em boys!"

Stopping the spread of communism was also an important goal back then, but secondary to the economic incentives.

Same old democracy, support the real Vietnamese forces, stop communist expansion etc.

In fact, it was our greed and megalomania. We somehow believe we know how the world should be run and everyone else is juvenile and cant think.

As is usual our interference made matters worse. Of course, the French had enough sense to leave before us! It didnt make a difference we lost. The country is still communist.

Some excuses were given but no one has explained why the Vietnamese can't decide for themselves or what our forces were doing in THEIR region

for economic factors. wars bring industrialilzation and bring jobs. pre war, the US economy was not so good, high unemployment plus many blacks on welfare. the only way to combat this was to bring new jobs by going to war. War needs factories to build tanks, planes, ammunition etc... plus it needs men to be soldiers.
of course they hide the truth and say it was to PROMOTE PEACE AND SPREAD PROSPERITY. if thats the case, y dont the americans go to Africa and make it less of a **** hole, oh noo Africa has no naural resources or benifets.

For the same reason we always enter wars! To make money, to try to take over other cultures and steal what we want and to try to bend others to our will.
