Many of the products at" Dollar "Stores are name brand items , as well as books that are selling for a lot more in book stores . How are" Dollar"stores able to sell so cheap on name brand items? Is it old merchandise ; or was the freight in a wreck ?

it could be both, or it could be an overstock item. Also, when businesses go under, they sell their stock to liquidators, which is in turn sold privately. So they could be getting their stock in that way also.

I have noticed lots of brand named items in these dollar stores, have you checked the expiration date? I have seen store items at dollar stores up to a year past pull date. What probably happened is that the store produced too much of the product and couldn't sell it and sold it to these distributors for a cheap price. The product was probably close to or past the expiration date. I don't think these stores even pay attention to the dates of the products that they are purchasing. I wouldn't want to buy the jug of juice that expired 3 months ago full price at the grocerystore, but I might buy it for only a buck at the dollar store - hey save 3.99 for outdated juice at the cheap store! yummm!

Sure they have name brand items, but sometimes they are placed eye level, with an off brand item, around it. Sure some of the things are old. But most of the stuff isn't of high quality,so they can get away with selling it real cheap. They make their money from selling most things that are not name brand,to compensates for the brand things. These stores are great for party prizes, this is for sure....have a wonderful day....dimples

Dollar Stores buy items in huge, bulk quantities, so they save money from the manufacturers. Also, many of their items are from foreign countries, so they are purchased cheaply. But what Dollar Stores do most often, is buy items that are closeouts or are being discontinued from the regular, more expensive stores. In this way, they can pass the savings along to us. Win - win.

Its mostly damaged merchandise. A book is a book no matter where you buy it, but I would watch out buying food items from a dollar store, it might be close to being out dated.

Oftentimes stores advertise popular items at a lower price than they are worth. Then, to make up for their losses, they charge slighty more for other items that people buy alot but don't expect to be a lower price. Their losses from selling higher quality products are equaled out by profits from selling cheaper items at a higher price. :)

The items are bought in such large retail amounts that they can sell it for a cheaper price than everyone else, but some of their stuff isn't in as good quality as the other stores.

They buy overstock, discontinued and seconds (items which were imperfect). If you pay close attention you will find that many of their items are defective or are an inferior quality compared to those sold at regular prices.
