I just found the copy of my certificate that the minister gave us when we got married, and I never sent anything in, and never got anything from the state acknowledging our marriage. I dont know if its the ministers job or mine to notify the state.

When I was married, there were two copies of the certificate, the one that was signed by the two of us and the witness, and the ceremonial copy, which was give to us for our wedding book.

You can find out easily by writing the recorders office with the details, to make sure it was done properly.

That's a good question. I'm in the same situation. I never sent my marriage certificate in for recording and it's now lost. I have since divorced my husband, but I would like to eliminate that marriage in my personal records. I guess you could check with the Clerk of Court for a copy of yours just in case the minister sent it in. I really don't think the marriage is legal unless the certificate is recorded, but I'm just not sure.....)(

You can call the hall of records where your marriage license would be filed and ask them if they have it on file. Usually the only way the state notifies you of your marriage license is if you requested copies of the license.

You and your husband and the witness have to sign it and give it back to the minister and he's supposed to send it off then it comes back to you. Unless, they have it on file, you're not legally married.

if the minster did not send it in, then you are not legally married, he has a limited time frame for the certificate to be recorded
