I understand the checking on them bit, but we didn't have them in our day.

It is not. It's simply a luxury that the parents can afford for a new gadget. My girls got part-time jobs to help pay for theirs. It teaches them responsibility if they are held accountable.

It's not. Every place that they would go has a phone, if not they can walk up the street until they find one. Most parents think that just because their kid has a cell phone and the kid tells them where they are that the kid is actually telling the truth. They could instead have their kid check in on a regular basis and if they don't then they get in trouble. Somehow we survived without cell phones up to this point. They are a luxury pure and simple.

When a lot of their friends have phones it seems important to kids to belong...

And the benefits can be great! If your child has afterschool activities they can call and let you know that they got out early or are getting out late. A lot of the mobile phone companies have phones (or plans) for children. You can have control over who your child talks to. Make sure that you tell your child this is a privillege that can be taken away too... Make them pay for a certain amount with extra chores or what not. I did this all with my brothers two years ago-- aged 12 and 17. And it was one of the best choices I EVER made!

why 12 or 13 year old...why not 9 or 10 year old or maybe any youngster who can dial a number. If we consider all the answers made then cell phones are for all those young people who knows how to make it work.

To be able to contact parents/guardians in case of emergency.
If you're lost, you can call someone for help.
In an emergency, whether it's with a stranger or you need the police to come, cell phones can be very useful.
If you're separated from your parents/guardians, then you can call them to let them know where you are.

If their friends have one, it's important to them!

Imagine being the only kid in school without a cell phone (do you hear the violin playing?).

They really will be convenient.

But, the main reason is that their friends have them.
Buy a text messaging package because that is more popular than leaving voice mail.

They will be essential at 15. I don't know about your kids or their situation.
