This is a very simple thing to do, here is the step by step :).
1. Create a .mp3 or a .wav or a sound file of the sound/music you want to play. For example: Beethoven9th.mp3
2. On your PPT program, go to Inset on your toolbars and scroll down to Movies and Sounds. (Make sure you are on your first slide)
3. Select Sound from File and locate the sound file on your hard drive.
4. Once the music is loaded, there should be a little speaker that appears on the slide, right click that little speaker and go to Custom Animation.
5. In the Multimedia Settings tab, uncheck play using animation order, and check the bubble saying Continue slide show. Finally, check After __ Slides in the "Stop Playing" options and enter in the number of slides you have.
6. If the song is not long enough to last throughout the whole presentation, you can check loop until stopped in More Options.
7. Click ok. Now the music should play when you start the slideshow and end when you finish. Make sure that if you are going to bring this presentation elsewhere that you have the music file on that computer.

You didn't indicate what version of PowerPoint that you are using, but here are the steps for PP2003. Other versions should be simliar.
Display the slide to which you want to add music or sound effects. On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then select insert a sound file. Browse to the sound file that you want to insert and double-click it. When a message is displayed, do one of the following:
- To play the music or sound automatically when you go to the slide, click Automatically.
- To play the music or sound only when you click the sound icon, click When Clicked.
- To adjust the settings for when the sound file stops, click the sound icon, right-click, and then click Custom Animation.
In the Custom Animation task pane, click the arrow on the selected item in the Custom Animation list, and then click Effect Options.
On the Effect tab, under Stop playing, do one of the following:
To stop the sound file on mouse-click of this slide, select On click (the default).
To stop the sound file after this slide, select After current slide.
To keep the sound file playing for several slides, select After, and then set the total number of slides the file should play on.

Find some good music. Right click and push SAVE TARGET AS. Go to your power point, and open custom animation. Go to insert (I think) and click "MOVIES AND SOUNDS". Then go to Songs in Files (or something like that). Insert it and VOILA'!
Sorry if I got some of the steps wrong. The computer I am on does not have power point, so I'm doing it from memory.
Hope that helps and good luck!
