Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ."

I would say "The Exorcist." I have not forgotten the line-ups of people waiting to get into the theatres that went on for blocks, the RCMP officers brought in for crowd control, the ambulances prominently parked and the extra first aid attendants for the overly emotional and faint of heart. The Exorcist split families down the middle and divided communities. Many believed that viewers would themselves become possessed. It all seems a little overhyped now, but it was very real and controversial to the people of the times. Religious leaders spoke out against it and many communities refused permission for local theatres to offer it for viewing. You had to be an adult, 21-yrs. old at that time, to watch it. In point of fact, the movie had been cut and censored so many times before it reached our local theatres, that except for some truly memorable scenes (the projectile vomiting of green matter and the head spinning in particular) many people went away feeling a sense of anticlimax.

The Passion of the Christ

The film caused upset around the world because of its extreme violence and because many thought it anti-Semitic.

I would have to say The Passion. Hollywood wouldn't do it, the ACLU tried to sue to stop production and everyone (who didn't see it) claimed it was anti-semetic.
