If someone says "She's making us crosser", and someone replies saying "Am I being cross?", what does this mean?

I'm from the States as well and my grandma always used that word. She would say she was cross with someone meaning she was upset or angry with them. Also, she would say someone used crossed words with her which meant they spoke to her in an angry or upset manner.
