My boyfriend says he "hates" country music because it's sad. But, is it just me or, those two words don't mix right. "hate and sad." People doesn't just "hate" something because it's sad. Or do they?

MY OPINION AFTER VIEWING WHAT OTHERS THINK: I kind of agree with stevenxtreme on, "Country music in general has gotten the reputation of being "uncool" by a majority of the population, and nobody likes to be uncool."

I personally like country music and I'm not trashy.... Last I check. hehe. To keep an open mind - I think the "Southern accent" is kind of sexy. *wink* and, Country music doesn't necessarly mean trailer trash. I think it has class compared to rapping about sex and drugs. I'm sure some people could separate trash from clean country music listeners. right? right.

I think a lot of what turns people off is the vocals. Many people find it annoying to hear people singing in deep southern accents with almost yodeling feel to it. Also, country music in general has gotten the reputation of being "uncool" by a majority of the population, and nobody likes to be uncool.

I'm not a big fan of country, but I can appreciate some good old Johnny Cash, or even some good instrumental bluegrass.

People who "hate" country music are usually people that don't understand the music and the emotions behind it. Country music is the only music genre today that takes you back to simpler times and makes you remember all the moments in your life that mean something-whether they're good moments or bad moments. In country music, you find songs that every day people can relate to-songs about family, fun, love, heart break, and a good party. I was raised on country music and it's still what I love today...a lot of people still think country is all about "she took my dog and my pickup and now I'm lonesome", but we know it's more complex than that. There are a lot of people who have no clue what country music is actually about, but they trash it anyway-simply because someone told them it wasn't cool and it was for trailer park hicks and they believed it. Try and get your boyfriend to listen to some country that isn't sad-show him the upbeat side. If he likes it, great! If not, that's fine too. We're all different, after all.

One thing I've never understood about country music and its proponents is why they play dress up. The cowboy boots and hats, the big buckles, and Wrangler jeans. They get on hip-hop style, but country costumes aren't cool, just archaic. Now, let's get to the music. The twang, the false vocals, the steel guitar, the " heartbroke" lyrics, are all about as inviting as a dank bar at 7:00 o'clock in the morning! Also, it's fringe music, not popular at all , believe it or not Christian music outsells country. Why don't we let this music die it's natural death, and throw it aside like the empty tin of Skoal that it is.

Its not that bad even though I do much like and prefer rap, r n' b and pop. But country music isn't really sad. In a way, its kind of boring but to some people it is supposed to be lively and happy. But the lyrics are boring and sometimes so boring that makes you sad but I don't hate it. I listen to one or two songs maybe...

I think that when we're young, we develope a real affinity for certain musical beats. I fell in love with Reggae, Ska and Punk early on. I hated Country because I lived in Houston during the Travolta / Urban Cowboy / Smokey and the Bandit phase and I wanted nothing to do with Cowboy music.

But this affinity for style changes.

I'm now 42 and have gone to Jazz and ...... Country. I like the new style of country. I like the sentiment and there's a kind of Gospal Country (like Underwood sings), that I just love.

Just stop next to me at a stop light when I have my windows open. You'll hear me singing, "Jesus take the wheel" at the top of my longs.

I even say "Howdy" to my workmates!

I think people dislike country music because it really means something. Every country song I listen to has a significant meaning to it. People just want to hear immature music with a great beat and some mediocre lyrics. Country music is anything but that. I'm not saying country music doesn't have a great beat, I'm just saying that's what people want to hear these days.

Honestly, country music represents all red-neck music and some white people don't like to be labeled as red-necks anymore. Plus us blacks go after them first when it comes to making fun of white people. Not really sorry because I'm not trying to offend anyone intentionally but I am trying to be as honest as I can be. That's just my opinion on why people dislike country music now. It's actually a grievance thing. I suggest you look into it.

There is a stereotype that country musicians are red-necks, hicks, or stupid. That the music is whiney and too pro-military/american. Yea sometimes they sing about sad topics but don't all genres of music? I love it because its different, and I am pro-military and its nice to know some people will openly support our troops. They have some of the greatest love songs of all time too.

In my experience most people who don't like country music and I'm talking about true country music not that mixture of junk that they play on the airwaves today. They don't like it because they have experienced some of what they are hearing and it brings back unpleasant memories, that they are trying to forget.
