eliminate your problem and drop in a 'complete'305 or 350 chevy motor it will bolt right up you will only have to change exhaust crossover pipe and possiblly move your frame motor mounts .depending on your vehicle, the 4.3 are too under powered for trucks and suvs .causes engine breakdown as well as poor fuel economy becuase its working harder to do the job.all together you can do the job for about $500 with the help of a good junkyard.good luck.let me know how you make out and if you need any help just email me and ill guide you through it .machzjrs@yahoo.com

The only way to determine the condition and what it needs is to take it apart and inspect everything for wear. Putting rings and bearings in would be a waste of time and money if the bores are tapered or out of round or the crankshaft is worn. You might want to do a compression test before anything else, and check the oil pressure with a gauge. If the compression is good and even and the oil pressure good you may want to just replace the oil pump, timing chain and gears, camshaft and lifters and have the heads done, and reseal it. If you go looking for trouble you will find it.

Dodgedude99 is incorrect, the 4.3 came out prior to 88 in the cars and vans but was first available in the S series trucks in 88.
I'm certain of this since I own an 86 van with a 4.3 and my uncle used to have an 84 or 85 caprice with a 4.3. These were carbed, injection came out in 87.

summit has a kit. part # FEM 2056020M-000. get online summitracing.com. Also type PAW and order a catalog. They have allot of different kind of rebuild kits for any engine and, good prices. Make sure you know what motor that you have. 2.8 have the water neck on the left side and the 4.3 has it on the right. 2.8 doesnt have the distrubutor going through it like the 4.3. 4.3 looks like a 350 chevy minus 2 cylinders.

you cant overhaul a 1986 4.3 v6, it didnt come out till 1988.
if you have a 1986 v6, its a 2.8 liter and not really worth rebuilding, its just not a very durable motor.
