Has anyone thought about what makes people so desperate that they will kill themselves to kill others? Would it be prudent to address the underlying causes of what drives people to be terrorists?

Terrorism is a relatively new phenomenon - maybe a few decades old.

No it's not because of Islam. Islam has been around for over a thousand years, and terrorism has only emerged a few decades ago.

Terrorism has occurred in many different areas, like Ireland, Africa, India, Russia, France, etc...
not involving muslims.

Terrorism exists as a cheap and pretty reliable political instrument. It is very easy to get started: in every society there are desperate people who, if worked well with and encouraged enough, may constitute a striking force which can be used by security service of a country as a pressure tool towrds the object country. There is a sophisticated switch on/off mechanism. This is classic, if You want a state-sponsored terrorism.
There is another one which is totally unmanageable. It is a new wave we have today. How it works? Issue a fatwa in Internet and proclaim, for instance that killing Americans may bring a direct way to paradise - Paradise NOW! People in remoted areas get inspired and prepare an attack without relying on anyone - what they need is some technical, religious and maybe financial aid. That's it - a hotel is blown up into pieces by a European looking guy without any beard or turban.
Why this exists? It is a way of self-expression for those who are committed and ambidextrous tool for power-interested groups/governments.

It sounds like you're specifically asking about suicide attacks (be it someone with a bomb strapped to them or someone that is armed and goes somewhere to kill people without regards for whether he/she dies). That I believe is a relatively new phenomenon, but terrorism (a strategy of using violence, social threats, or coordinated attacks, in order to generate fear, cause disruption, and ultimately, bring about compliance with specified political, religious, or ideological demands) has been around forever.

As for reasons why people might become terrorists and commit some type of suicide attack, here are some factors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism#Common_characteristics_of_terrorists

I'm not too sure that terrorism is a new idea. We hear of it now because of the Muslims slaughtering each other trying to get Saddam's job.
In the second world war Japs intentionally commited suicide in order to damage American ships.
The inquisition was a type of terror.

It might have something to do with the lack of basic nourishment and resources of populations that have been under oppressive theocratical rule for decades.

The prince gets richer and the poor get more desperate. When the poor get desperate they turn to the Koran. You can fill in the rest.

Islam is the cause. They believe that non-muslisms are enemies of God. A religion that preaches such violent intolerance is bound to cause problems.

Terrorism exists because it works. If we don't want terrorism to work, then we need to stop letting them scare us.
