all file types don't work? try installing codec as the others have suggested. if that doesn't work....
assuming you have winxp and your player used to work...try going to a previous restore point. I believe you can find this option in your control panel.
you may also want to check the time on your system clock. i know this sounds silly but believe it or not i've had problems with another program not working properly and the solution was setting the correct time/date.

I've had the problem a few times.. I'm sorry I don't remember how I fixed it.. I looked up for stuff about it at the microsoft page.
Well.. you should try other files of the same file type.. if they are not working as well.. then.. maybe get a new media player.
VLC Media Player. This player pretty much supports every movie file type out there.. a small but very good media player.. and it even fixes damaged filetypes.. so far if it can.

The Mediaplayer May possibly be missing the video Codecs. DIVX or the X Vid Codecs, these are the most used compression softwares that people use to reduce the media file size so that they can be uploaded on the internet.
You can download these free Codecs from the internet
Divx and Xvid are the codecs that you needs to install.

It is most likely that you are missing a codec for your media player. (Codecs are small add-ons that decode your videos). To get a codec, go to Media Players' Tools --> Options --> Player and check Enable Codec Download. As well, check Check for updates once a day.
If you dont want to bother with downloading codecs, you can always download the VLC player (another media player that has all codecs) for free at www.videolan.org/vlc

You have to download a codec from www.divx.com and install it. That should fix it. In the rare case that the movie is encoded using xvid, you would need to get that codec instead of the divx codec. I'm not sure which site to use for that.

Download a codec pack. If you're playing any kind of downloaded videos, sometimes they require codecs which Windows didn't come with.

I think you dont have the necessary codecs. Download and install them. You better first try the Divx codec(latest one)
