Yes- there are real mystery shoppers. I used to manage a restaurant, and we had them come in once or twice a week. Usually they have guidelines they follow to make sure the staff is following proper procedures, the bathrooms are clean, ect.. If you work in a full service restaurant, usually they will make a reservation, go to the bar for at least one cocktail, and time the dining experience. If you know what to look for, you can usually pick them out pretty easily. Follow your training, and you should get a good report!

It is a real thing but I signed up for one that claimed you paid a one time fee of $39.95 and it will give you a list of companies looking for mystery shoppers. Well, the catch was that each of those companies wants you to pay an additional fee of say $25 and go through training. And of course, that is all before you even know if there is a actually a job in your location. Really pissed me off to be scammed like that but I am smarter now.

Yes, they are. I have worked in retail for 7 years. We get a report from them about every 6 months.

Also, a friend is a mystery customer for a bank. Once a month she fills out a survery about the service she received while @ the bank.

I know someone who is a mystery shopper. She enjoys it. It's a real thing, and many places never know they have one in their store, until confronted when checking out.

I signed up for mystery shopping once, just to see how well it paid. It doesn't pay well at all, maybe a dollar for one "mystery shop". That would barely cover your gas! It was not enough compensation for me.
