I was told it leans North. Looking at it, it looks like it is leaning to the right, which would be East. If it is indeed leaning North, does this mean it is leaning backwards? T/y

Wouldn't it depend where you are standing? In a picture taken from on angle it is leaning to the right, but what if I went around to the other side and took a picture, it would be the left. I've been there, but don't remember which direction it was facing.

No, the edifice has shifted slightly to the right. It is not leaning backwards. In recent years, some stabilizing was performed to reduce the amount and speed of this movement and shifting. And in 2002, a certain amount of tourists were allowed at one time to enter and tour the building. This was done on hourly intervals.

South - look under the 1272 date and read from the attached link. Also, if you use google earth - you can get an aerial shot of it when you zoom in on the tower and physically see that it leans south

Depends on which direction you are looking from. You can be facing it from the N, S, E, W, or any point in between.
