I never really understood. How long is a period? At what points can a girl have/not have sex or anything? What's a tampon for?

Poor thing. Here, look: the cycle is normally 28 days, with 3-9 days (approx) of "menstruation", which is the bleeding (arguably the most fun part). We ovulate (release 1 egg) at around the middle of the cycle (approx) or the 12-15th day. The bleeding is the uterine wall shedding because the egg was not fertilized (long story). Tampons are one option for stopping the "menstrual flow"/bleeding from coming out onto underpants or whatever. They absorb the liquid and tissue internally and can then be tossed (into trash or toilet) and changed. Girls can have sex at any time at all during their cycle, but some prefer not to engage during mentruation.
Two IMPORTANT things: 1-Never be grossed out by a period/tampon/etc. (or at least pretend that you are not). 2-Pay close attention to these approximations if you are trying to prevent pregnancy- it's all a big gamble with the numbers really.

Tampons are for women who don't like to wear diapers (maxi pads)!
