My OB told me with both my pregnancies that "caffeine in *moderation* is alright, and won't harm your baby. 1-2 cups of coffee a day is OK, as long as you drink extra water to make up for the diuretic property of the caffeine." A cup of coffee is 6 oz., not the 24 oz. mega gulp coffee from Starbucks. :)

It's funny...with my first pregnancy, the thought of coffee made me absolutely ill, so I cut it out completely. With my second pregnancy, I actually craved it, so I had my 1 cup a day, and had some decaff, as well.

As far as other things...obviously common sense should tell you to stay away from all street drugs and hard liquor, and if you're currently taking any prescriptions, discuss them with your OB to make sure they won't harm your unborn baby. As for beer and wine...my OB told me pretty much the same thing...one *small* glass of beer or red wine is OCCASIONALLY OK, but don't go overboard with it. (i.e. A glass of redwine one night a month is OK.) Just keep in mind that anything, ANYTHING you ingest goes to your baby.

As for unsafe foods, I was told softserve ice cream, frozen yogurt and coldcuts should be avoided as they can cause lysteria if the machines aren't cleaned properly (icecream) and the coldcuts aren't kept refrigeraged. Tuna should be eaten sparingly (no more than 3 oz. a week, although tuna melts were also one of my cravings, and both my kids are perfectly healthy. I think I probably consumed the equivalent of one can per week.) Foods to definitely avoid are shark, swordfish and other deep sea fish as the levels of mercury in the fish can harm your baby.

If you have any other questions, check out www.babycenter.com or ask your doctor/midwife. Both are wonderful sources for pregnancy/baby info. Good luck to you, and congrats!

more the 4 caffeine drinks in one day has been shown to increase the risk of miscarriage. I do drink a soda with caffeine maybe 4 days a week MAX only one can. I'm sure it would be better to not drink at all. One every now and then is not going to damage the baby. My friend has 4 kids all healthy she drank COFFEE in all her pregnancies 3 to 4 cups a day, I would not do that!. Also when you have a soda DRINK 2 cups of water caffeine can dehydrate the body and that's never good. caffeine IS not ANYTHING like drinking whiskey smoking and doing coke who ever posted that is CLUELESS. No child has died or been born damaged because it's mother drank a frigin pop in pregnancy "grow up". Only drinking pop could be a problem thou.

There is absolutely no proof that indicates that caffine has any effect on the baby except that if it raises your heart rate it may raise hers. That is it. Now as far as what to eat... follow your cravings. Your body craves foods because it is what it needs. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated and be sure to eat 3 good meals a day... no skipping. For the first 3 months of my pregnancy I could only eat McDonalds... yes I know not all that healthy but hey my baby was perfectly fine... large (11 lbs) but perfect in every way... Congratulations!

I was told that it was okay to have caffine but all in moderation. Like no more than one or two cups of coffee a day. I limited my caffiene intake along that advice and my daughter was born perfectly healthy. I would try to follow a healthy diet, that will help you both in the end. What you eat now she/he can taste, so make sure you have variety to get him/her used to different tastes. Eating in moderation too, just because your eating for two doesn't mean you need to mow down, eat right and stop when your full. Good luck and congrats

Depends on your doctor. Some don't like for you to drink caffeinated drinks, some don't seem to mind. Have known plenty of women, self included, who have had perfectly healthy babies with out giving up their soda.

Among other things, caffeine restricts the blood vessels in your body, including your brain. It can transfer its effects to your baby, so it is not considered safe during pregnancy.

Now, don't freak out if you've had a glass or two. Just keep it to a minimum, or cut it out altogether if you can.

Honestly caffine isn't great for the baby, but it is my drug of choice and the doc told me that it was allright to have one caffinated drink a day And so I did and I have a healthy 7 month baby girl.
