E-mail is always better, because they can easily reply and continue to communicate with you. If you send them a postal letter, it just causes more work for them and they can't easily forward your letter like they can with e-mail to other people who need approval to interview and/or hire you. There is nothing "personal" about sending a postal letter, it shows you aren't practical.
Do NOT show up in person unless they ask you to do this, because it causes more work for them and it shows you don't understand business.

I'm not sure who or what HR is, but a letter of application, accompanied by a brief resume, is always impressive and most likely will receive more attention than an e-mail. E-mail may be interpreted as taking the lazy route unless the employer has specifically asked for applications via e-mail.
Good luck.

The truth is it doesn't matter, while it takes more effort to write in to apply that application takes more time to get there and more effort to sort through. In fact a lot of jobs, especially government jobs, no longer allow you to apply any way but online, either from home or a job center. If you want a quicker response go with email.

Type up a cover letter and resume and send it to the contact at the company, include an employment application if needed. Email could be deemed too informal unless specifically asked by the employer

if you send an application by email, make sure it is set up as a letter, possibly as an attachment. if they ask for email or writing they shouldn't have a preference for either, but maybe email, since that's included. just send a letter and resume, depending on the type of job. good luck!

Send a neatly formatted current resume with a refrence sheet and contact information THROUGH THE MAIL. Business are still kind of old fashioned about stuff like that and mail is so much more professional.

Having worked in HR, I would definately say email. Also that gives you proof of when you submitted the app. and that you did submit one versus them filing yours in a file 13 b/c they don't feel like reading it or their behind so they reduce their work load at your expense. Good Luck with the job!!!
