The North had the factories and the population advantage. The South were better shots. It was a mess (600,000 dead)

Union strengths:
Union had the majority of the industry i.e. they were able to manufacture war materials with relative ease.

Union had many more people and when the war became very unpopular they were able to start conscription (the draft).

Union weaknesses:
They had some of the worst military leaders the world had ever seen, especially at the start of the war.

Confederacy strengths:
The south raised almost all the cotton being grown at that time and Europe wanted the cotton for their textile industry.

The south had the most capable leader (Robt E. Lee).

Confederacy weakness:
Because of the Union control of the seas the south did not have a reliable way to deliver the cotton to Europe.

Confederacy did not have sufficient numbers of people to maintain an army and keep the agriculture going all at the same time.

A lot of the generals under Gen. Lee were not the leader he was and there was a lot of bickering and jealousy between the generals under him. (See the history of the battle of Gettysburg).
