I've seen some estimates on the expected life span of a hard drive, but I was looking to expand that into a # of computers failing by some daily/monthly/annual measure

It depends on your HD brand name. Some high end HD last for longer. Some 3th world HD last very short. And it also depend on the HD maintenance. Such as do you turn on the HD spin idle when the computer is not in use?

From my experience, a new Maxor/Seagate HD (manufacture from Singapore) can last for 3-5 years. Maxor/Seagate HD (manufacture from China) can last for 2-3 years.

Hope this can answer your question.

Just had my WD 80 gig fail after 2 years. Not happy.

I have no idea how you could arrive at even a wildly reasonable estimate. There are a lot in use hence a lot of failures.
