Those who said no haven't done their homework! Yes, it is done, usually because the mare has some sort of physical problem causing often vicious behavior due to excessive hormones, or if the mare gets extra cranky when they're in heat,(hormones again). If this causes problems with riding and/or showing having the mare spayed is often the only answer. Yes, it's expensive when compared to having a colt gelded, but it's well worth it for an exceptional mare.

It *IS* Possible.

However, a mare losing her ovaries and uterus causes hormonal imbalances. You'll get a mare acting more "Stallion like", similiar to when they're pregnant.

Abdominal surgery is VERY risky in any horse. Horses who have such surgeries have to stay off their feet, and that increases their risks of gut twisting and colic.

The ONLY reason you would EVER spay a mare/filly is if their immediate life was in absolute danger, and it was the last resort ever.

Yes, female horses can be neutered. It is, however, a very expensive operation that is usually done in a veterinary hospital, and not at your barn as is usually the case with male horses.

Depending on the situation, mares and fillies can be fixed, but it isn't very common, and it can be dangerous.

No, that would be a very difficult and dangerous operation. You don't take such risks with expensive and valuable mares.

They don't, normally, because abdominal surgery for a horse is VERY risky.
