Jack Lambert or Ray Nitschke or yes, Dick Butkiss was a bad man. Another good answer is Ronnie Lott. You have to go back to the 60's and 70's to really view a wider pool of tough players. Players today don't hit like that. With new NFL rules they actually can't hit like that legally anymore. I like the 1970's. 80's were okay too.....the 1990's and beyond have sucked potatoes in pretty much every aspect of life except technology.

Seen other answers, but you still have to go with Butkus. Guy played his entire career with bad knees, and still was one of the fastest people sideline-to-sideline who ever played the game. An absolutely intimidating force on the football field that guys like Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher could only hope to emulate. Totally redefined the position of middle linebacker.

Butkus was tough, but just about everyone was in the old days. Ray Lewis is a tough defender today, so is urlacher. Offensively I think Jeremy Shockey is pretty tough.

Current player = Brian Urlacher

Former player = Ronnie Lott

Playing with a finger tip that he had "cut-off" at halftime was awesome and pretty tough if you ask me.

Gotta go with Ronnie Lott...as Hal H alluded to, the man amputated his finger, not to finish a season but a game!

Too many players out there to compare to one another. Got to keep in mind Emmitt Smith. Played with separated shoulders and all during his career

Lyle Alzaydo...i remember him swinging a guy around by his facemask like a dog with a chewtoy. Dick "Nighttrain" Lane was a badazz. And does anyone remember a number 56 with the Giants....what was his name....oh yeah LAWERENCE TAYLOR.The man wore a towel with the numbers of qb's he hurt (not cool, but kinda cool)

I was impressed when Ronnie Lott had one of his fingertips amputated during the season so he wouldn't miss any games.
