A friend of ours is in hospital, waiting for a major operation. He's got a rough time ahead, and doesn't want any visitors, but we want to let him know we are thinking of him. Most cards are cheerful chirpy things saying "Get Well soon if not sooner!!!" or making jokes about the hilarious mistakes surgeons make.

So we buy blank cards - but it's so hard to think what to write in them that will brighten up his long days and keep his spirits up.

Please suggest some phrases because we are running out of cliches and finding it hard to say what will make him smile & not lose heart. Isn't there any new way of saying "We know you are not going to get instantly better, and we can't know what you are going through, and will face, but we are all thinking of you and willing you well. Wish we could do more."

I would really appreciate some good thoughts. Only one of us is good with words and we can't copy what she sends him! I know from being ill that it can really help.

The trouble with having even mild Aspergers syndrome is that "just tell him how you feel" isn't good enough for anyone ill to hear. And since his love of science-fiction includes a lot of such people ...

No one ill really wants to hear
"Rather you than me",
"What's that funny smell?"
"I hate hospitals - can you get better and meet us somewhere else?"
"You were great - the guy who covers for you is so crap that I've resigned."
"I'm here because I want to hurt the people who are causing you pain"
"Why can't you go back in time and live a better life?"
"Are the surgeons properly qualified?"
" How can you afford not to work?"

I am genuinely, sincerely, requesting positive phrases to suggest instead of the phrase which come naturally to some. I really do appreciate anything which might make him feel like surviving cancer. So many people who really miss his company are not capable of saying that, or why, or why they are communicating with him. They don't have the vocab.

I hope some of these help, but anything from the heart says alot. Just tell him how you feel.

So you're sick.
Look at the bright side...
Now you finally have a reason
to whine and complain!

They say laughter
is the best medicine...
...so go out in the hallway
and walk behind other people
in hospital gowns!

Sorry you're not
feeling your best.

You mean a lot to me.

Thinking of you.

May hope be
your heart's companion
today and always.

Hope you're back
to your cool self
again soon!

If knowing that someone cares
helps the healing process...
...then you should be
feeling better already.

May you find the courage
to face tomorrow
in the love that surrounds
you today.

I know. I know.
You want to go home.
You want to sleep
in your very own room.
How can they expect
a person to sleep in a place...
...with no dust bunnies
under the bed!

Sure, being in
the hospital is a downer,
but look on the bright side...
...at least they serve you
breakfast in bed!

I've got a prescription
to make you feel better..
...and chocolate is available
over-the-counter.

If you get well,
I'll eat this card...
I got this recipe
from the hospital kitchen

Let me kiss it and
make it all better!
Or at least
make it happier!

You do know why
they design hospital gowns
that way, don't you?
To make your stay
more bare-able.

May good health
be yours again soon.

Sending hugs and kisses
and get well wishes

You are in our thoughts
and prayers

You don't have to long-winded or flowery, just tell him how you feel. Tell him he's a good friend, you're sorry he has to go through that, you'll be thinking about him all the time and if there's anything you can do, for him to let you know. Maybe mention that you don't want to intrude, but you want him to know he's cared about.
